Xatradhikar of Batadrava Than hails Election Commission of India decision

GUWAHATI: The Xatradhikar of Batadrava Than (Narua Xatra) has welcomed the decision of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to change the nomenclature of Nagaon legislative assembly constituency (LAC) to Nagaon-Batadraba LAC.

According to the draft delimitation proposal published by the ECI on June 20, the name of the Batadrava LAC had been abolished. Some villages of the LAC were included under the Dhing LAC and the Batadrava Than was included under the Nagaon LAC. The Xatradhikar of Batadrava Than and the local people had then urged the ECI to name the Nagaon LAC as Batadrava LAC. They wanted the name of the Than to remain intact in the LAC as it is the birthplace of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev.

In the final order for delimitation of Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies in Assam published by the ECI today, the Nagaon LAC has been renamed as Nagaon-Batadraba LAC. Xatradhikar of Batadrava Than, Debananda Dev Goswami said, “Batadrava Than is the birthplace of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev. The name of the Than has been added to Nagaon LAC. We welcome the decision of the ECI. Today many xatras are facing many challenges. But this move of the ECI will help in the protection of the Batadrava Than.”
