GUWAHATI: Consumers' Legal Protection Forum, Assam (CLPF) in association with Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK) and Consumer Voice New Delhi organized a webinar with the civil society organization on coalition building for tobacco free Assam on Friday. The webinar was attended by more than 60 leading civil society organizations from 33 districts of Assam along with the participants from the other States of India.
The inaugural speech was delivered by Dr. Amal Chandra Kataki, Director, B Barooah Cancer Institute on "Status of tobacco control in Assam, and how civil society should work to control the prevalence". Advocate Ajoy Hazarika, Secretary, CLPF moderated the webinar. Other speakers delivered speeches in different topics like Dr. Arunduti Deka, Assam State Nodal Officer, NTCP on "Tobacco control in Assam", Narendar Kumar, Principal Consultant (State Policy) CTFK on "Civil society and the Government's collective efforts for tobacco free Assam", Ashim Sanyal, COO, Consumer Voice on "Initiatives in tobacco control in Assam" and Dr. Kunal Oswal, Public Health- Lead Cancer Care Program, Tata Trust on "Other initiatives for tobacco control and Cancer Care in the State".
The speakers expressed their concern about the increasing number of tobacco users basically among the youth in Assam day by day. Participants form different district of Assam agreed to work together to fight against the effect of tobacco and make Assam a tobacco-free State.
